Danny McCullers was one of the people who made the music just when the Big Bands were going out of style. He loved the life that set him and his fellow musicians a bit apart from the rest of the world. His world was on the bandstand with the colored lights going around, the horns hitting it together, the laughing women dressed in beautiful clothes. It was hotel rooms and all-night cafes and long automobile rides over deserted highways, and, always, there had to be the whisky. But at only thirty-one, his world was deteriorating fast, in a haze of alcohol. At the end of summer, in a small beach town where the band was playing a one-night stand, Danny came to realize that his life might be different-that he still might make it different. He had only to make a choice.
